How To Make Metal Bench Vise

bench vise INTRODUCTION :

bench Vice used in Engineering Workshop: A bench Vice is a holding tool which is used to hold the specimen or the workpiece in between the two jaws. Out of the two jaws, one jaw is fixed and the other is movable.

A bench vice has two parallel jaws which work together to firmly clamp an object and hold it in place. A threaded screw, which is connected to the jaws, runs through the body of the vice, and its movement is controlled by a handle, which is located on the outer end of a vice.

Metal bench Vise is used to clamp metal instead of wood. It is used to hold metal when filing or cutting. It is sometimes made of cast steel or malleable cast iron, but most are made ofcast iron. However, most heavy duty vises are 55,000 psi cast steel or 65,000 psi ductile iron. Some vises have a cast iron body but a steel channel bar. Cast iron is popular because it is typically 30,000 psi grey iron which is rigid, strong and inexpensive. The jaws are often separate and replaceable, usually engraved with serrated or diamond teeth. Soft jaw covers made of aluminium, copper, wood (for woodworking) or plastic may be used to protect delicate work. The jaw opening of an engineer’s vise is almost always the same size as the jaw width, if not bigger.

An metal bench vise is bolted onto the top surface of a workbench, with the face of the fixed jaws just forward of its front edge. The vise may include other features such as a small anvil on the back of its body. Most bench vises have a swivel base.

Parts of Bench Vice:

  • 1. Jaws (fixed jaw and movable jaw)
  • 2. Fixed body
  • 3. Movable body
  • 4. Handle

Material Used:

  • 2 nos. L Section channel 2” (10” (inch) length)
  • 12mm thickness metal plate
  • 10mm thickness metal plate
  • 2 nos. hard metal pieces (1.5cm*2cm) 8cm length (for both jaws)
  • 5/8 Threaded metal piece 30mm*30mm (20mm thickness) for main bolt
  • 5/8 Main bolt (11” length)
  • Spring 17mm diameter (30mm length)
  • Washers and pin
  • 8mm stud with 2 lock nuts (7” length) for handle
  • 10 nos. 5mm countersunk allenky bolts
  • 4 nos. 6mm countersunk allenky bolts
  • 18 nos. ¼ countersunk allenky bolts
  • 4 nos. 3/16 headed allenky bolts

How to make :

Heavy Duty Bench Vice

This metal bench vise is divided in to two parts. First is fixed part and second is movable part. First step is, make a base of the metal bench vise. I have used 12mm thickness metal plate to make a base of this bench vise.

Heavy Duty Bench Vice

Cut the 12mm metal plate in to the shape of image shown, using angle grinder. Dimension is 5.25”*7” (inch).

Next step is, attach the 5/8 threaded metal piece of 30mm*30mm (20mm thickness) on the base plate for 5/8 main bolt. I have used 2 nos. ¼ countersunk allenky bolts (25mm length) to attach this metal piece on the base plate.

Now, cut the 2 nos. 12mm metal plate in to the shape of the image shown. Dimension is 7cm*8.5cm. Attach both this metal plate on base plate by using of 6 nos. ¼ countersunk allenky bolts. This is the main body of the fixed part.

Cover the main body of the fixed part with 7.5cm*3cm metal piece and 4.5cm*4.7cm metal piece (12mm thickness) by using of 6 nos. 5mm countersunk allenky bolts.

Then after, I make a movable body of the bench vise. This is the movable part. I have used 2 nos. L Section channel (10” length). Overlap and attach both this L section channel by using of 4 nos. ¼ countersunk allenky bolts (25mm length) as shown in the image.

Cut the 2 nos. 10mm metal plate in to the shape of the image shown. Dimension is 5cm*8cm (10mm thickness). Attach this both plate with the movable body by using of 6 nos. ¼ countersunk allenky bolts, as shown in the image.

Heavy Duty Bench Vice

Cover this movable body part from 4.5cm*4.7cm (12mm thickness) metal plate by using of 4 nos. 5mm countersunk allenky bolts.

bench vise

Next and last step is to make a handle of the bench vise. I have used 5/8 Main bolt (11” length) to move the movable part of this metal bench vise and 8mm stud with 2 lock nuts (7” length) for handle.

I attach spring 17mm diameter (30mm length), washers and pin to fix the main bolt with the moving part for better movement, as shown in the image.

Truly a master craft, by the way which die set do you use for threading. I’m also a hobby tool maker, recently moved to metal from wood.
